Jimmy Buffett, Taffy, and Church Searches – Stretching Through Blogging Blunders

Today, I have the privilege of presenting Larry “The Deuce” Carter.  Larry and I recently became friends thanks to the wonders of the on-line blog world.  Larry puts out some pretty thought-provoking posts at his blog, Deuceology, and his comments at Jon Stolpe Stretched and on other blogs always make you think and usually make you laugh.  Today, Larry shares how he is currently being stretched.  Please join in the conversation here and also hook up with Larry on his blog and via Twitter.

(I’m always looking for guest bloggers who are interested in sharing their “Stretch” stories with the Stretched Community.  If you’re interested in writing a guest post, leave a comment, so I can hook up with you.)

I didn’t realize what I was getting myself into when I answered the call to guest-post for Jon. I hadn’t followed him long enough to pick up on the stretched motif of his blog. But when he told me that I should discuss being stretched, I didn’t have to think long before I came up with an idea since I’m in the process of being stretched right now.

I have my own blog over at http://deuceology.wordpress.com. Without going into tremendous detail, I wrote some things that I shouldn’t have written. Some of these things were disrespectful of some people who I have known for several years. Some difficulty ensued which resulted in my family and I leaving my church.

There you have it. I said the wrong things in my blog. I left my church. Guess who’s to blame? Oh, I would love to blame someone else, but just like Jimmy Buffett realized in Margaritaville, it’s my fault and no one else’s.

So, how has that stretched me?

Well, it certainly has matured me in my blogging. Despite being forty-three years old, I can still be a bit childish on occasion.  I certainly proved that.  So, I was stretched and learned a great lesson about blogging.  It’s made me a better blogger.  It’s helped me in the direction of my blog.  I’ve so many lessons about blogging through this that I would never have learned.  However, that probably isn’t the best way I’m being stretched right now.

How else am I being stretched? Well, I’m about to begin a search for a new church. While a bit exciting, I also face it with a bit of trepidation. New church. New pastor. New people. It may be enjoyable, but it certainly isn’t comfortable.  Despite my failure, God is going to use this failure in my life to put me in a new place to worship and serve Him.

There you have it. I’ve been stretched like taffy and foresee it continuing for a while.  Would you pray with me as I begin this new phase of my life?

How have you been stretched through mistakes in blogging?  How about during a church search?

  3. I agree with Larry. I like your guest blogger and believe everyone should read his. Mine too. 🙂 Seriously Jon/Larry. Thanks for posting this. As a pastor I know I have to be careful about what I post. While the thoughts are mine, I know they reflect on the church. I once posted about having a young lady who was living with someone on our worship team and wondering what everyone thought. I pulled that post almost immediately after it was published because my tech geek wondered about the ramifications of it, especially if she should read it. Wise man. I’m glad I did.

Side: Gonna have to read some more of your stuff Jon. I was born/raised in West Mifflin, Pa. Familiar with Grove City but not where you live now. My brother remarried just over a year ago and moved to Norwin. And…i was 6’3″ in college. A couple of years ago I went to the doctor and they measured me at 6’5″. Go figure. 🙂

    • Bill, Thanks for the comment and welcome to the Stretched Community!

My father-in-law grew up in the Norwin area. And my wife is from Greensburg/Latrobe. We live close to the Philly area on the opposite side of the state.

  4. Larry Deuced it UP!!!

    Great Words Larry,

I’ve never really had problems on My blog…per say…

I think i posted some political stuff in the 08 elections and that didn’t go so good…so i stopped doing that…

I don’t really talk about “church contorversy” cause…well…i think the problem is not the church…it’s the people…so I write post that reflect me….and go figure that people are very similar in experience and thought…

    Stay in da word Deuce!

Political stuff….? Definitely dangerous material for the blog. 🙂

  5. Great post! I find it so interesting with this online world, especially Facebook, that people feel free to post things they would NEVER say in public otherwise. I am not sure what causes folks to do this. Sometimes I look at FB posts and think ‘what in the world were they thinking’. Oh, I’ve certainly posted things that I went back later and removed, so I am not without fault. It was certainly a lesson to think before you hit publish.

    • It is interesting. I know I’ve typed a few status updates that I’ve either erased before hitting submit or I’ve erased right after I submitted them. A rule that I’ve heard people refer to: “Would you want your Grandma reading what you’re about to type?”.

  6. Larry, while I can’t say that I have been stretched through my blogging to date, this serves as a wonderful reminder that our words are read by many and that there are situations where we should tread lightly. Thank you for the accountability!

  7. Great lesson learned Larry! I think its important that we always watch what we post and say. I’m not afraid to tackle tough issues but try to make sure that if I show anyone in a bad light its only me. Its a fine line sometimes between being true to your beliefs without disparaging others. Sometimes you can’t help if it offends others. Look foward to coming back to both blogs! God Bless!!

  8. Wow Larry, that is quite a stretch you are going through..

Great lessons learnt, though quite painful i imagine 🙂

My greatest stretch right now is settling and adjusting to life in America (4 months old here) …and yes the biggest is finding a church to settle in!

Sometimes, I do churn out what i consider to be great material for my blog, but during the editing stage, I realize much of the content cannot be posted. Its either too harsh, vent-full, unkind e.t.c. I believe that balance and maturity are key.

    Great read here
