What's S-t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g me now?

It’s 40!

Yesterday, I shared about my Grandpa, and I mentioned that I think about him every year at this time.  The reason I think about him especially today is that we share a birthday – today!  Yep, that’s right, the Stretched blogger turns 40 today.  How did that happen?

As I consider this milestone, I’m thankful.  I’m thankful for all the life I’ve experienced so far and for the life that lies ahead for me.  I’m grateful for the people that God has placed in my life.  And I’m so thankful for a God who loves me in the ups and downs, the goods and the bads, and in my successes and failures.  Today’s Psalm applies perfectly to my thoughts for the day.

1 I waited patiently for the LORD;
   he turned to me and heard my cry.
2 He lifted me out of the slimy pit,
   out of the mud and mire;
he set my feet on a rock
   and gave me a firm place to stand.
3 He put a new song in my mouth,
   a hymn of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear the LORD
   and put their trust in him.

 4 Blessed is the one
   who trusts in the LORD,
who does not look to the proud,
   to those who turn aside to false gods.
5 Many, LORD my God,
   are the wonders you have done,
   the things you planned for us.
None can compare with you;
   were I to speak and tell of your deeds,
   they would be too many to declare.

 6 Sacrifice and offering you did not desire—
   but my ears you have opened—
   burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not require.
7 Then I said, “Here I am, I have come—
   it is written about me in the scroll.
8 I desire to do your will, my God;
   your law is within my heart.”

 9 I proclaim your saving acts in the great assembly;
   I do not seal my lips, LORD,
   as you know.
10 I do not hide your righteousness in my heart;
   I speak of your faithfulness and your saving help.
I do not conceal your love and your faithfulness
   from the great assembly.

 11 Do not withhold your mercy from me, LORD;
   may your love and faithfulness always protect me.
12 For troubles without number surround me;
   my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see.
They are more than the hairs of my head,
   and my heart fails within me.
13 Be pleased to save me, LORD;
   come quickly, LORD, to help me.

 14 May all who want to take my life
   be put to shame and confusion;
may all who desire my ruin
   be turned back in disgrace.
15 May those who say to me, “Aha! Aha!”
   be appalled at their own shame.
16 But may all who seek you
   rejoice and be glad in you;
may those who long for your saving help always say,
   “The LORD is great!”

 17 But as for me, I am poor and needy;
   may the Lord think of me.
You are my help and my deliverer;
   you are my God, do not delay.

Psalm 40

  1. Looks like I might be the first to wish you a Happy Birthday Jon. Congrats on that milestone. I could say “Happy Birthday old man” but that wouldn’t sound right coming from one who is. :) Blessings to you today and in the future. May you know God’s favor.

  5. Happy birthday from one who’s gone before you: 40 is what you make of it. And for someone who’s walking with Jesus there’s no need for crisis: you will get where He wants you to be.

  6. Celebrating milestones is so important in life. We need to intentionally pause and think back about the past and what God has brought us through. If we don’t intentionally do this, it’s so easy to keep going and going and going through the hustle of life. Congrats on the big 4-0.

    • Loren, This is great advice. In many ways, I have tried not to dwell to deeply on how “old” I should be feeling. More than anything, I’m thankful for the blessings I’ve experienced and the blessings to come.

  8. Happy Birthday, Jon. Hope it’s a great day and a great year for you. That’s the next number I hit as well. Sometimes, it so hard to believe. I still feel 25 :)

    • Thanks, Eileen! Most days I still feel 25, but there are a few days when I feel 40 or 50. Overall, I can’t complain. I’m thankful for a new year. Happy early 40th to you!

  9. When I turned 40, I felt like I was finally a real adult. But in the 25 years since then, I have been very aware of how much I am still changing and learning.
    Love Ya!
    Dad
